Reading 1 – Wisdom 7:22b – 8:1
For in Wisdom is the spirit –
understanding, holy, one,
manifold, subtle, eloquent,
active, undefiled, sure,
sweet, loving what is good,
quick, unhindered, beneficent,
gentle, kind, steadfast,
assured, secure, all-powerful,
overseeing all, and containing all spirits:
the intelligible, the pure, the subtle.
For Wisdom is more active than all activity,
and reaches everywhere by reason of her purity.
For she is an aura of the power of God,
and a certain pure emanation
of the glory of the almighty God.
Therefore nothing defiled comes into her.
For she is the brightness of eternal light,
and the unspotted mirror of God's majesty,
and the image of his goodness.
Though being only one, she can do all things.
Remaining herself the same, she renews all things.
Through the ages she conveys herself into holy souls,
She makes friends of God and prophets.
For God loves none but the one who dwells with wisdom.
For she is more beautiful than the sun,
and above all the order of the stars.
Compared with light, she takes precedence,
for that is overcome by night,
but no evil can overcome wisdom.
She reaches therefore from end to end mightily,
and orders all things smoothly.
Responsorial – Psalm 119.89, 90, 91,130,135,175 Resp. 89a
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
Forever, O Lord, is your word
it stands firm in heaven.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
Your truth is unto all generations.
You have founded the earth, and it continues.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
By your decree the day goes on,
for all things serve you.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
The declaration of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to little ones.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
Let your face shine upon your servant:
and teach me your directions.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
My soul shall live and shall praise thee:
and your decrees shall help me.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.
Gospel – Luke 17.20-25
Being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come,
Jesus answered them, and said:
“The Kingdom of God does not come with observation.
Nor will it be announced:
“Behold here it is” or “Behold there it is”.
For the Kingdom of God is existing within you.
And he said to his disciples,
“The days will come when you will desire to see one day of the Son of Human but you shall not see it.
And they will say to you, “Behold, he is there” and “Behold, he is here.”
Do not go away with them. Do not follow them.
For as the lightning strikes, lighting up the sky from one part to the other,
so shall the Son of Human be in his day.
But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this kind.
