Reading 1 – James 1.12-18
Blessed is the man who endures temptation,
for when he has been proven,
he will receive the crown of life,
which the Lord promised to those who love him.
Let no one say when they are tempted,
“I am tempted by God,”
for God cannot be tempted by evil,
and he himself tempts no one.
But each one is tempted,
when he is drawn away by his own desires, and enticed.
Then the desire, when it has conceived, bears sin;
and the sin, when it is full grown, produces death.
Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.
Every good gift and every perfect gift
is from above, coming down from the Father of lights,
with whom can be no variation, nor shifting shadow.
Of his own will he gave birth to us by the word of truth,
that we should be a kind of first fruits of his creatures.
Responsorial – Psalm 94.12-13a, 14-15, 18-19 Resp. 12a
R. Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord.

and teach with your law;
that you may give him rest from the days of adversity,

The disciples forgot to bring bread;
and they did not have more than one loaf in the boat with them.
Jesus warned them, saying, “Take heed:
beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
They reasoned with one another, saying,
“It is because we have no bread.”
Jesus, perceiving it, said to them,
“Why do you reason that it is because you have no bread?
Do you not perceive yet, nor understand?
Are your hearts still hardened?
You have eyes; do you not see?
You have ears, do you not hear?
Do you not remember?
When I broke the five loaves among the five thousand,
how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”
They told him, “Twelve.”
“When the seven loaves fed the four thousand,
how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?”
They told him, “Seven.”
He asked them, “Do you not yet understand?”

Reading 1 – Isaiah 10:5-7, 13b-16
Thus says the LORD:
Woe to Assyria,
the rod of my anger,
my staff in indignation!
will send him against a profane nation,
and against the people who anger me
I will give him a command
to take the plunder and to take the prey,
and to tread them down
like the mire of the streets.
However he does not intend this,
nor does his heart think thus;
but it is in his heart to destroy,
and to cut off not a few nations.
For he has said,
“By the strength of my hand I have done it,
and by my wisdom; for I have understanding:
and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples,
and have robbed their treasures.
Like a valiant man I have brought down their rulers.
My hand has found
the riches of the peoples like a nest,
and like one gathers eggs that are abandoned,
have I gathered all the earth.
There was no one who moved their wing,
or that opened their mouth, or chirped.”
Should an ax brag against him who chops with it?
Should a saw exalt itself above him who saws with it?
As if a rod should lift those who lift it up,
or as if a staff should lift up someone who is not wood.
Therefore the Lord God of hosts,
will send among his fat ones leanness;
and under his glory
a burning will be kindled like the burning of fire.

R. The Lord will not forsake his people
They break your people in pieces, O Lord,
and afflict your heritage.
They kill the widow and the alien,
and murder the fatherless.
R. The Lord will not forsake his people
They say, “The Lord will not see,
nor will the God of Jacob consider.”
Consider, you senseless among the people;
you fools, when will you be wise?
R. The Lord will not forsake his people
He who formed the ear, will he not hear?
He who formed the eye, will he not see?
He who disciplines the nations, will he not punish?
He who teaches man knowledge.
R. The Lord will not forsake his people
For the Lord will not cast off his people:
nor forsake his own inheritance.
For judgment will return to justice,
and all the upright of heart will follow it.

Gospel – Matthew 11.25-27
At that time, Jesus answered,
“I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
that you hid these things from the wise and understanding, and revealed them to infants.
Yes, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in your sight.
All things have been delivered to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son, except the Father;
nor does anyone know the Father, except the Son and anyone to whom the Son desires to reveal him.”

Reading 1 - Romans 11.1-2a, 11-12, 25-29
Brothers and sisters:
I ask, therefore, has God cast away his people?
Not at all!
For I too am an Israelite, from the seed of Abraham,
from the tribe of Benjamin.
God has not cast away his people, whom he foreknew.
Do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah,
how he intervenes with God against Israel?
I ask, therefore, did they stumble so that they would fall?
Not at all!
But rather that by their fall,
there might be salvation for the Gentiles,
so that they would be jealous of them.
But if their fall is a windfall for the world,
and their deficiency a windfall for the Gentiles;
how much more their fullness?
For I do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of this mystery,
(lest you be wise in your own eyes),
that the stubbornness in part of Israel has happened
until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in.
And so all Israel shall be saved, as it is written:
There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer,
who shall turn away impiety from Jacob.
And this for them is my covenant
when I shall take away their sins.
Indeed, with respect to the gospel, they are enemies because of you,
but with respect to the election,
they are loved because of their fathers.
For the gifts and the call of God are not regretted.

When Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the Sabbath, to eat bread, they were watching him carefully.
So he told a parable to them who were invited,
noticing how they chose the highest seats at the table,
saying to them:
"When you are invited to a wedding,
do not sit down in the highest place,
since perhaps someone more honorable than you has been invited,
for the one who invited you both will come and say to you,
'Give this man your place',
and then you will go with shame to take the lowest place.
But when you are invited,
go, sit down in the lowest place,
so that when he who invited you, comes, he may say to you,
'Friend, go up higher.'
Then you shall be respected by those who sit at table with you.
Because everyone who exalts themself, shall be humbled;
but those who humble themself, shall be exalted.
