Reading 1 – 1 John 5:14-21
Beloved:
This is the boldness which we have toward him,
that, if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us.
And if we know that he listens to us, whatever we ask,
we know that we shall have what we have asked for.
If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not unto death,
they shall ask,and God will give them life for those who sin not unto death.
There is mortal sin: I am not saying that they should make a request concerning that.
All unrighteousness is sin. And there is sin which is not mortal.
We know that whoever is begotten of God does not sin,
but he protects the begotten of God and the Evil One does not touch him.
We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the Evil One.
We know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding,
so that we know him who is true, and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ.
He is the true God and eternal life.
Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
Responsorial – Psalm 149.1-2, 3-4, 5+6a+9b Resp. 4a
R. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. or Alleluia!
Sing to the Lord a new song,
his praise in the assembly of the saints.
Let Israel rejoice in him who made them.
Let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.
R. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. or Alleluia!
Let them praise his name in the dance!
Let them sing praises to him with tambourine and harp!
For the Lord takes pleasure in his people.
He crowns the humble with salvation.
R. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. or Alleluia!
Let the saints rejoice in honor.
Let them sing for joy on their beds.
May the high praises of God be in their mouths.
All his saints have this honor. Alleluia.
R. For the Lord takes pleasure in his people. or Alleluia!
Gospel – John 3.22-30
After these things, Jesus came with his disciples into the land of Judea.
He stayed there with them, and baptized.
John also was baptizing in Enon near Salim, because there was much water there.
They came, and were baptized. For John was not yet thrown into prison.
There arose then a debate on the part of John’s disciples with some Jews about purification.
They came to John, and said to him,
“Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified,
behold, he baptizes, and everyone is coming to him.”
John answered, “A human can receive nothing, unless it has been given them from heaven.
You yourselves testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before him.’
He who has the bride is the bridegroom,
but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him,
rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice.
Therefore, this my joy, is complete.
He must increase, but I must decrease.

Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Reading 1 – Numbers 21.4b-9
They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea,
to go around the land of Edom.
The soul of the people was very discouraged because of the journey.
The people spoke against God and against Moses,
“Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?
For there is no bread, and there is no water,
and our soul loathes this worthless food.”
The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people.
Many people of Israel died.
The people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned,
because we have spoken against the Lord, and against you.
Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.”
Moses prayed for the people.
The Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole.
It shall happen that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.”
Moses made a serpent of bronze, and set it on the pole.
If a serpent had bitten anyone, when they looked at the serpent of bronze, they lived.
Responsorial – Psalm 78.1bc-2, 34-35, 36-37, 38 Resp. 7b
R. Do not forget God’s deeds.
Hear my teaching, my people.
Turn your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will open my mouth in a parable.
I will utter dark sayings of old.
R. Do not forget God’s deeds.
When he killed them, then they sought him.
They returned and inquired after God earnestly.
They remembered that God was their rock,
that the Most High God was their redeemer.
R. Do not forget God’s deeds.
But they flattered him with their mouth,
and lied to him with their tongue.
For their heart was not right with him,
neither were they faithful to his covenant.
R. Do not forget God’s deeds.
But he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity,
and did not destroy them.
Yes, many times he turned his anger away,
and did not stir up all his wrath.
R. Do not forget God’s deeds.
Reading 2 – Philippians 2.6-11
Brothers and sisters:
Christ Jesus,
though existing in the form of God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped.
Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,
being made in the likeness of humans.
And being found in human form,
he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death,
yes, the death of the cross.
Therefore God also highly exalted him,
and gave to him the name which is above every name;
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord
to the glory of God the Father.
Gospel – John 3.13-17
Jesus said to Nicodemus:
No one has ascended into heaven,
except he who descended out of heaven:
the Son of Human.
As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
even so must the Son of Human be lifted up,
that whoever believes in him

that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to judge the world,
but that the world should be saved through him.

Reading 1 – Acts 5.27-33
When the court officers had brought the Apostles,
they set them before the Sanhedrin.
The high priest questioned them, saying,
“Did we not strictly command you
not to teach in this name?
Behold, you have filled Jerusalem
with your teaching
and intend to bring
this human’s blood on us.”
But Peter and the Apostles answered,
“We must obey God rather than humans.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus,
whom you killed, hanging him on a tree.
God exalted him at his right hand
to be a Prince and a Savior,
to give repentance to Israel
and remission of sins.
We are His witnesses of these things;
and so also is the Holy Spirit,

When they heard this,
they were cut to the heart

Responsorial – Psalm 34.2+9, 17-18, 19-20 Resp. 7a
R. The Lord hears the poor who cry out. or R. Alleluia!

Reading 1 – Acts 5.17-26
The high priest rose up,
and all those who were with him
(that is the sect of the Sadducees),
and filled with jealousy,
they laid hands on the Apostles,
and put them in the public jail.
But an angel of the Lord
opened the prison doors by night,
and brought them out, and said,
“Go stand and speak in the temple
to the people all the words of this life.”
When they heard this,
they entered into the temple about daybreak
and taught.
When the high priest came,
and those who were with him,
and called the Sanhedrin together,
all the senate of the sons of Israel,
and sent to the prison to have them brought.
But the officers who came
did not find them in the prison.
They returned and reported,
“We found the prison shut and locked,
and the guards standing before the doors,
but when we opened them,
we found no one inside!”
Now when the high priest,
the captain of the temple,
and the chief priests heard these words,
they were very perplexed about them
and what might become of this.
Someone came and told them,
“Behold, the men
whom you put in prison
are in the temple,
standing and teaching the people.”
Then the captain went with the officers,
and brought them without violence,
for they were afraid
that the people might stone them.

Reading 1 – Acts 4.32-37
The multitude of those who believed
were of one heart and soul.
Not one of them said that anything
of their property was their own,
but they had all things in common.
With great power,
the apostles gave their witness
of the Resurrection of the Lord Jesus.
Great grace was on them all.
For there was not any needy among them,
for whoever owned land or houses sold them,
and brought the proceeds
of the things that were sold,
and laid them at the apostles’ feet,
and distribution was made to each,
accordingly as anyone had need.
Joseph, who was named Barnabas by the Apostles
which means “Son of Encouragement”,
a Levite, a Cypriot by kind,
having a field, sold it,
and brought the money
and laid it at the Apostles’ feet.
Responsorial – Psalm 93.1ab, 1cd-2, 5
R. The Lord reigns! He is clothed with majesty! or R. Alleluia!
The Lord reigns! He is clothed with majesty!
The Lord is robed and armed with strength.
R. The Lord reigns! He is clothed with majesty! or R. Alleluia!

Reading 1 – Acts 4.23-31
Having been released,
Peter and John came to their own,
and reported all that the chief priests
and the elders had said to them.
When they heard it,
Together they lifted up
their voice to God and said,
“O Sovereign Lord,
who made the heaven, the earth,
the sea, and all that is in them;
who through the Holy Spirit
by the mouth of our father
David, your servant, said,
“Why do the nations rage,
and the peoples plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers take council together,
against the Lord, and against his Christ.’
For truly, in this city
against your holy servant, Jesus,
whom you anointed,
both Herod and Pontius Pilate,
with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,
were gathered together
to do whatever your hand and your will
predestined to happen.
Now, Lord, look at their threats,
and grant to your servants
to speak your word with all boldness,
while you stretch out your hand to heal,
and that signs and wonders
may be done through the name
of your holy servant Jesus.”
When they had prayed,
the place shook
where they were gathered together.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Responsorial – Psalm 2.1-3, 4-7a, 7b-9 Resp. 11d
R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
Why do the nations rage,
and the peoples plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord, and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us break their bonds apart,
and cast their cords from us.”
R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
He who sits in the heavens will laugh.
The Lord will hold them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his anger,
and terrify them in his wrath:
“I have set my King
on my holy mountain of Zion.”

R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
The Lord said to me, “You are my Son.
Today I have begotten you.
Ask of me, and I will give you
the nations for your inheritance,
the uttermost ends of the earth for your possession.
You shall break them with a rod of iron.
You shall dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”
R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
Gospel – John 3.1-8
There was a human from the Pharisees
named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
He came to Jesus by night, and said to him,
“Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher
who has come from God,
for no one can do these signs that you do,
unless God is with him.”
Jesus answered him,
“Amen, amen, I tell you,
unless one is born from above,
he cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
Nicodemus said to him,
“How can a human be born when they are old?
Can they enter a second time
into their mother’s womb and be born?”
Jesus answered,
“Amen, amen, I tell you,
unless one is born of water and spirit,
they cannot enter into the Kingdom of God!
That which is born of the flesh is flesh.
That which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
Do not marvel that I said to you,
‘You must be born from above.’
The wind blows where it will,

but do not know where it comes from
or where it is going.

and the rulers take council together,
against the Lord, and against his Christ.’
For truly, in this city
against your holy servant, Jesus,
whom you anointed,
both Herod and Pontius Pilate,
with the Gentiles and the people of Israel,
were gathered together
to do whatever your hand and your will
predestined to happen.
Now, Lord, look at their threats,
and grant to your servants
to speak your word with all boldness,
while you stretch out your hand to heal,
and that signs and wonders
may be done through the name
of your holy servant Jesus.”
When they had prayed,
the place shook
where they were gathered together.
They were all filled with the Holy Spirit,
and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
Responsorial – Psalm 2.1-3, 4-7a, 7b-9 Resp. 11d
R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
Why do the nations rage,
and the peoples plot a vain thing?
The kings of the earth take a stand,
and the rulers take counsel together,
against the Lord, and against his Anointed, saying,
“Let us break their bonds apart,
and cast their cords from us.”
R. Blessed are all those who take refuge in the Lord. or R. Alleluia
He who sits in the heavens will laugh.
The Lord will hold them in derision.
Then he will speak to them in his anger,
and terrify them in his wrath:
“I have set my King
on my holy mountain of Zion.”
I will tell of the decree of the Lord.
The wind blows where it will,
and you hear its sound,
but do not know where it comes from
or where it is going.
So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”

Reading 1 – 2 Chronicles 36.14-16, 19-23
In those days, all the heads
of the priests and the people,
sinned very greatly
after all the abominations of the nations;
and they polluted the Lord’s house
which he had made holy in Jerusalem.
The Lord, the God of their fathers,
sent to them by his messengers,
sending them early on,
because he had compassion on his people,
and on his dwelling place,
but they mocked the messengers of God,
and despised his words,
and scoffed at his prophets,
until the wrath of the Lord
arose against his people,
until there was no remedy.
Their enemies burnt God’s house,
and broke down the wall of Jerusalem,
and burnt all its palaces with fire,
and destroyed all the goodly vessels of it.
Nebuchadnezzar carried those
who had escaped from the sword
away to Babylon,
and they were servants to him and his sons
until the reign of the kingdom of Persia,
to fulfill the Lord’s word
spoken through the mouth of Jeremiah,
“until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths”
As long as it lay desolate it kept Sabbath,
to fulfill seventy years.
Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia,
that the Lord’s word by the mouth of Jeremiah
might be accomplished,
the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia,
so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom,
and put it also in writing, saying,
“Thus says Cyrus king of Persia,
The Lord, the God of heaven,
has given all the kingdoms of the earth to me,
and he has commanded me
to build him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah.
Whoever there is among you of all his people,
the Lord his God be with him, and let him go up.”
Responsorial – Psalm 137.1-2, 3, 4-5, 6. R. 6ab
R. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you.
By the rivers of Babylon,
there we sat down; yes, we wept,
when we remembered Zion.
On the willows in that land,
we hung up our harps.
R. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you.
For there, those who led us captive
asked us for songs.
Those who tormented us demanded songs of joy:
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
R. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you.
How can we sing a song of the Lord
in a foreign land?
If I forget you, Jerusalem,
let my right hand forget its use.
R. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you.
Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth
if I do not remember you;
if I do not prefer Jerusalem
above my greatest joy.
R. Let my tongue stick to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you.
Reading 2 - Ephesians 2.4-10
Brothers and sisters:
God, being rich in mercy,
because of his great love
with which he loved us,
even when we were dead
through our trespasses,
made us alive together with Christ
(by grace you have been saved),
and raised us up with him,
and made us to sit with him
in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,
that in the ages to come
he might show the exceeding riches
of his grace in kindness
toward us in Christ Jesus.
For by grace you have been saved through faith,
and that not of yourselves;
it is the gift of God, not of works,
so that no one could boast.
For we are his handiwork,
created in Christ Jesus for the good works
which God prepared ahead of time
that we would walk in them.
Gospel – John 3.14-21
Jesus said to Nicodemus:
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness,
even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
For God so loved the world,
that he gave his one and only Son,
that whoever believes in him
shall not perish, but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son
into the world to condemn the world,
but that the world should be saved through him.
Who believes in him is not condemned.
Who does not believe has been condemned already,
because they have not believed
in the name of the one and only Son of God.
This is the crisis:
the light has come into the world,
and humans loved the darkness so much more
than the light,
for their works were perverse.
For everyone who does evil
hates the light,
and does not come to the light,
lest his works would be exposed.
But he who does the truth
comes to the light,
that his works may be revealed,
that they have been done in God.
