Thursday of the Second Week of Easter

Official Translation

Reading 1 – Acts 5.27-33

When the court officers had brought the Apostles,
they set them before the Sanhedrin.
The high priest questioned them, saying,
“Did we not strictly command you
not to teach in this name?
Behold, you have filled Jerusalem
with your teaching
and intend to bring
this human’s blood on us.”
But Peter and the Apostles answered,
“We must obey God rather than humans.
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus,
whom you killed, hanging him on a tree.
God exalted him at his right hand
to be a Prince and a Savior,
to give repentance to Israel
and remission of sins.
We are His witnesses of these things;
and so also is the Holy Spirit,
whom God has given to those who obey him.”
When they heard this,
they were cut to the heart
and determined to kill them.

Responsorial – Psalm 34.2+9, 17-18, 19-20 Resp. 7a

R. The Lord hears the poor who cry out. or R. Alleluia!

I will bless the Lord at all times.
His praise will always be in my mouth.
O taste and see that the Lord is good.
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him.

R. The Lord hears the poor who cry out. or R. Alleluia!

But the face of the Lord is against evildoers,
to cut off remembrance of them from the earth.
The just cried, and the Lord heard them,
and delivered them out of all their troubles.

R. The Lord hears the poor who cry out. or R. Alleluia!

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,
and he will save the humble of spirit.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.

R. The Lord hears the poor who cry out. or R. Alleluia!

Gospel – John 3.31-36

He who comes from above is above all.
He who is from the earth belongs to the earth,
and speaks of the earth.
He who comes from heaven is above all.
What he has seen and heard,
to this he testifies;
and no one receives his witness.
Whoever has received his witness
has set his seal to this: that God is true.
For he whom God has sent
speaks the words of God;
for God gives the Spirit without measure.

The Father loves the Son,
and has given all things into his hand.
One who believes in the Son has eternal life,
but one who disobeys the Son will not see life,
but the wrath of God remains on him.
