Reading 1 – Micah 5.1-4a
The LORD says:
You, Bethlehem-Ephrathah,
too small to be among the clans of Judah,
from you one will come for me
who is to be ruler in Israel;
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.
Therefore the Lord will abandon them
until the time when she who is in labor gives birth.
Then the rest of his brothers will return to the children of Israel.
He shall stand, and shall shepherd in the strength of the Lord,
in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God:
and they will remain, for then he will be great
even to the ends of the earth.
He shall be peace.
Or Romans 8.28-30
Brothers and sisters:
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God,
to those who are called according to his purpose.
For those whom he foreknew, he also predestined
to be conformed to the image of his Son,
that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Those whom he predestined, he also called.
Those whom he called, he also justified.
Those whom he justified, he also glorified.
Responsorial – Psalm 13:6ab, 6c Resp. Isaiah 61:10

Gospel – Matthew 1.1-16, 18-23 or 18-23
The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham became the father of Isaac.
Isaac became the father of Jacob.
Jacob became the father of Judah and his brothers.
Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar.
Perez became the father of Hezron.
Hezron became the father of Ram.
Ram became the father of Amminadab.
Amminadab became the father of Nahshon.
Nahshon became the father of Salmon.

by her who had been the wife of Uriah.

Jehoshaphat became the father of Joram.

Uzziah became the father of Jotham.
Jotham became the father of Ahaz.

at the time of the exile to Babylon.
After the exile to Babylon,

Jacob became the father of Joseph,
the husband of Mary,
from whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ happened in this way:
After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph,
but before they came together,
she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit.
Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man,
and unwilling to shame her,
resolved to divorce her secretly.
But while he thought about these things,
behold, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream, saying,
“Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid
to take in Mary, your wife,
for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Spirit.
She shall give birth to a son.
You shall call his name Jesus,
for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.”
Now all this has happened,
that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet,
might be fulfilled:
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child,
and shall give birth to a son.
They shall call his name Emmanuel”;
which means “God with us.”
