Reading 1 – 1 Peter 5.1-4
Beloved:
Therefore I exhort the presbyters among you, as a fellow presbyter,
and a witness of the sufferings of Christ,
who will also share in the glory that will be revealed:
shepherd the flock of God which is among you,
exercising the oversight, not under compulsion, but voluntarily,
not for dishonest gain, but willingly;
nor as lording it over those entrusted to you, but making yourselves examples to the flock.
When the chief Shepherd is revealed, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.
Responsorial – Psalm 23.1-3a, 4, 5, 6 Resp. 1
R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He has me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I will fear no evil, for you are with me.
Your rod and your staff –
they comfort me.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
You prepare a table before me,
in the presence of my foes.
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.
R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Gospel – Matthew 16.13-19
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi,
he asked his disciples, saying,
“Who do humans say that the Son of Human is?”
They said, “Some say John the Baptist,
some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah,
or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter answered,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah,
for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you,
but my Father who is in heaven.
I also tell you that you are Peter,
and on this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the underworld will not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven,
and whatever you bind on earth
will have been bound in heaven;
and whatever you release on earth
will be released in heaven.”
