Reading 1 – Isaiah 26.1-6

In that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:
“We have a strong city; he builds walls and bulwarks for our salvation.
Open the gates, that the righteous nation which keeps the faith may enter in.
You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stuck on you, because he trusts in you.
Trust in the LORD forever: for in the LORD GOD there is everlasting strength.
For he brings down those who dwell on high.
The lofty city, he lays it low; he lays it low, even to the ground; he brings it to the dust.
The foot shall tread it down, even the feet of the poor, and the steps of the needy.

Responsorial – Psalm 118:1+8-9, 19-21, 25-27a Resp. 26a

R. Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD. or R. Alleluia

O give thanks to the LORD; for he is good,
for his mercy endures forever.
It is better to trust in the LORD
than to put confidence in man.
It is better to trust in the LORD
than to put confidence in princes.

R. Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD. or R. Alleluia

Open to me the gates of righteousness.
I will enter and I will praise the LORD.
This is the gate of the LORD,
the righteous shall enter.
I will praise you, for you have heard me,
and have become my salvation.

R. Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD. or R. Alleluia

Save now, I beseech you, O LORD.
O LORD, I beseech you, send now prosperity.
Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD.
we have blessed you from the house of the LORD.
God is the LORD, he has shown us light.

R. Blessed be he who comes in the name of the LORD. or R. Alleluia

Gospel – Matthew 7.21, 24-27

Jesus said to his disciples,
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven;
but the doer of the will of my Father in heaven.
All, therefore who hear these my words and do them,
is like a wise man, who built his house on the rock.
The rain fell; the floods came; and the winds blew,
and beat upon that house; and it did not fall
for it was founded on the rock.
And every hearer of these my words, who does not do them,
is like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand:
The rain fell; the floods came; and the winds blew and beat on that house;
and it fell and great was the fall of it.

Reading 1 – Romans 10.9-18

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord,
and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead,
you shall be saved.

For with the heart, one believes unto justification,
and with the lips, one confesses unto salvation.
For the scripture says,
“Whoever believes in him shall not be ashamed.”
For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek,
for the same Lord is Lord of all, with riches for all who call upon him.
For whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?
And how shall they hear unless it is preached?
And how shall they preach unless they were sent?
As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good gospel,
But they have not all obeyed the gospel.
For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?”
So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
But I say, “Have they not heard?”
Amen, their voice went to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

Responsorial - Psalm 19.8, 9, 10, 11 Resp. 10 or John 6.63

R. The judgments of the Lord are true, completely just. or R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The law of the LORD is perfect,
reviving the soul;
The testimony of the LORD is trustworthy,
making the simple wise.

R. The judgments of the Lord are true, completely just. or R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The precepts of the LORD are right,
rejoicing the heart;
The command of the LORD is pure,
enlightening the eyes.

R. The judgments of the Lord are true, completely just. or R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

The fear of the LORD is clean,
enduring forever;
The judgments of the LORD are true,
completely just.

R. The judgments of the Lord are true, completely just. or R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

They are more desirable than gold,
than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey,
honey from the comb.

R. The judgments of the Lord are true, completely just. or R. Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life.

Gospel – Matthew 4.18-22

Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee,
saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and Andrew his brother,
casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen.
He said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
They immediately left their nets, and followed him.
Continuing on from there, he saw two more brothers,
James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother,
in a boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
They immediately left the boat and their father and followed him.

Reading 1 – Isaiah 11.1-10

There shall come forth a shoot out of the stump of Jesse,
and a branch shall sprout from his roots.
And the spirit of the LORD will rest upon him:
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and fortitude,
the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD,
and his delight shall be the fear of the Lord.

He shall not judge by eyesight,
nor correct using what his ears hear,
but he will judge the poor with righteousness,
and correct with equity for the meek of the earth,
and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth,
and with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
He will gird his waist with righteousness,
and gird his loins with faithfulness.

The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the kid.
The calf and the young lion and the fattened calf together,
and a little child shall lead them.
And the cow and bear shall graze,
their young ones shall lie down together,
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play above the hole of the asp,
and the weaned child shall put his hand on the viper’s den.

They shall neither hurt nor destroy on all my holy mountain.
For the earth shall be as full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.
In that day the root of Jesse shall stand as a sign to the people.
The nations will seek him, and his rest shall be glorious.

Responsorial – Psalm 72.1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17 Resp. 7

R. In his day, justice shall flourish, and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.

Give the king your judgment, O God,
and your righteousness to the king's son.
He shall judge your people with righteousness,
and your poor with judgment.

R. In his day, justice shall flourish, and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.

In his day, justice shall flourish,
and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.
He shall have dominion from sea to sea,
and from the river to the ends of the earth.

R. In his day, justice shall flourish, and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.

He shall deliver the needy when they cry;
the poor, who have no helper.
He shall spare the poor and needy,
and shall save the souls of the needy.

R. In his day, justice shall flourish, and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.

His name will endure forever.
His name will continue as long as the sun.
The people will be blessed in him.
All nations will call him blessed.

R. In his day, justice shall flourish, and the fullness of peace as long as the moon endures.

Gospel – Luke 10.21-24

Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said,
“I confess you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding
and revealed them to little children.
Yes, Father, for so it became benevolent in your sight.

All things have been handed to me by my Father,
and no one knows who the Son is if not the Father,
or who the Father is if not the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him."

Then turning to the disciples, he spoke just to them:
"Blessed are the eyes that see what you see!
For I tell you that many prophets and kings
desired to see what you see, and did not see it,
and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Reading 1 – Isaiah 2.1-5

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:

It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the LORD's house
shall be established as the highest of mountains and shall be exalted above the hills,
and all nations shall flow to it.

Many people shall come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways, and we will walk in his paths.”

For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people.
They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks.
Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, nor shall they learn war any more.

O house of Jacob, come! Let us walk in the light of the LORD.

Responsorial – Psalm 122.1-2, 3-4b, 4cd-5, 6-7, 8-9 Resp. see 1

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

I was glad when they said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
Our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem.

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

Jerusalem is built as a city
that is compact together.
To it the tribes go up,
the tribes of the LORD.

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

According to the covenant of Israel,
to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.
For there are set thrones of judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem.
They shall prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls,
and prosperity within your ramparts.

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

For the sake of my family and companions,
I will now say, “Peace be within you.”
Because of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good.

R. Let us gladly go to the house of the Lord.

Gospel – Matthew 8.5-11

As Jesus entered into Capernaum,
a centurion came to him, petitioning him and saying,
“Lord, my servant lies paralyzed at home, grievously tormented.”
He said to him, “I will come to heal him.”
The centurion answered saying,
“Lord, I am not worthy that you enter under my roof,
but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed.
For I, a human, am under authority.
I have soldiers under me, and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes;
and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my servant, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.”

Hearing this, Jesus marveled, and said to those who followed,
“Amen I say unto you: I have not found such faith. Not in Israel.
I say to you, many shall come from the east and west,
and shall sit down to eat with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.”

Reading 1 - Isaiah 63.16b-17, 19b; 64.2-7

You, O LORD, are our father,
your name, “Our Redeemer”, is from eternity.
O LORD, why did you let us
go astray from your ways
and harden our hearts against fear of you?
Return, for your servants' sake,
to the tribes of your inheritance.
O that you would rend the heavens!
O that you would come down!
O that the mountains might erupt at your presence!

As when you did amazing things
which we did not expect,
As when you came down,
and the mountains erupted at your presence.
As from the beginning of time humans had not heard.

Ear has not heard nor has the eye seen
a god other than you,
who has prepared such things
for those who wait for him.
You meet the one who rejoices in righteous deeds,
who remembers you and your ways,
in which are our preservation and salvation.

Behold, you are angry for we have sinned
We are all like something unclean,
and all our good deeds are as filthy rags.
We all fade like leaves,
and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
There is no one who calls upon your name,
who stirs themself up to take hold of you.
You conceal your face from us,
and you are melting us in the hand of our iniquities.
But you, O LORD, are our Father.
We are the clay and you are our potter.
We are all the work of your hand.

Responsorial – Psalm 80.2-3, 15-16, 18-19 Resp. 4

R. Turn us back, O God, and cause your face to shine on us, and we shall be saved.

Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,
You who dwell among the cherubim, shine forth.
Stir up your strength,
and come to save us.

R. Turn us back, O God, and cause your face to shine on us, and we shall be saved.

Return, we beseech you, O God of Hosts.
Look down from heaven and see,
Visit this vine and the vineyard
which your right hand has planted,
the son whom you made strong for yourself.

R. Turn us back, O God, and cause your face to shine on us, and we shall be saved.

Let your hand be upon the human of your right hand,
upon the son of human whom you made strong for yourself.
So we will not withdraw from you;
Enliven us and we will call upon your name.

R. Turn us back, O God, and cause your face to shine on us, and we shall be saved.

Reading 2 – 1 Corinthians 1.3-9

Brothers and sisters:
Grace to you and peace,
from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always concerning you,
for the grace of God given to you in Christ Jesus,
that in everything you are enriched in him,
in all speech and all knowledge.
Just as the martyrdom of Christ was established in you.
Therefore you are not lacking in any gift,
awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ,
who will also establish you until the end,
blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Faithful is the God through whom you were called into
fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

Gospel – Mark 13.33-37
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Look out! Stay awake!
For you do not know
when it is the time.
It is like a human going on a journey,
leaving their house
and giving authority to their servants,
to each their own work
and a command to the doorman
that they would stay awake.

Therefore, stay awake.
For you do not know
when the master of the house will come
Whether late or at midnight
or when the rooster crows
or in the morning.
Lest he come suddenly
and find you sleeping.
What I say to you, I say to all:
‘Stay awake!’”

Reading 1 – Daniel 7.15-27

My spirit trembled.
I, Daniel, was frightened at these things,
and the visions in my head troubled me.
I went near to one standing by
and asked him the truth
concerning all these things,
and he told me
the interpretation of the words,
and instructed me:

“These four great beasts are four kingdoms,
which shall arise out of the earth.
But the saints of the Most High God
shall receive a kingdom
and possess the kingdom forever and ever.”

After this I was diligent to learn
about the fourth beast,
which was very different from all the others,
and exceedingly terrible:
its teeth and claws were of iron;
it devoured and broke in pieces,
and the rest it stamped on with its feet,
and about the ten horns on its head,
and about the other horn which came up,
before which three horns fell,
and of the horn’s eyes
and the mouth speaking great things,
and how it was greater than the others.

As I watched, that horn
made war against the saints,
and prevailed over them,
until the Ancient of Days came
and gave justice to the saints of the Most High,
and the time came when the saints
obtained the kingdom.

And thus he said:
“The fourth beast shall be
the fourth kingdom upon earth,
which shall be greater than all the kingdoms,
and shall devour the whole earth
and tread it down and break it in pieces.
And the ten horns of this kingdom,
shall be ten kings.

Another shall rise up after them,
and he shall be mightier
than those who went before.
He shall bring down three kings.
He shall speak words against the Most High,
and shall crush the saints of the Most High,
and he shall think himself able
to change times and laws,
and they shall be delivered into his hand
until a time and times and half a time.

But the court shall sit in judgment,
so that his power shall be taken away,
and be broken in pieces,
and perish to the very end,
so that the kingdom and the power
and the greatness of the kingdoms
under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people
of the saints of the Most High.
His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and all kings shall serve him and obey him.

Responsorial – Daniel 3.82, 83, 84, 85, 86, 87 Resp. Psalm 66.2b

R. Give to him glory and praise!

You sons and daughters of humans, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

O Israel bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Priests of the Lord, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Servants of the Lord, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Spirits and souls of the just, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

You holy and humble of heart, bless the Lord:
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Gospel – Luke 21.34-36

Jesus said to his disciples:
"Guard yourselves,
lest your hearts be burdened
with parties and liquor and anxieties
and that day come upon you suddenly.
Like a trap, it shall spring upon all
who sit upon the face of the whole earth.
Keep watch, praying at all times,
so that you will become strong enough
to escape all these things that are to come,
and to stand before the Son of Human."

Friday of the Thirty-Fourth Week in Ordinary Time (I)

Reading 1 – Daniel 7.2-14

I, Daniel, saw my vision by night:
See the four winds of heaven
blew upon the great sea.
And four great beasts,
different one from another,
came up out of the sea.

The first was like a lion,
but had the wings of an eagle.
I watched until its wings were plucked off,
and it was lifted up from the earth,
and stood upon its feet like a human,
and the mind of a human was given to it.

Behold another beast like a bear
stood up on one side,
and there were three tusks in its mouth,
among its teeth.
They said to it: “Arise, devour much flesh.”

After this I looked,
and lo, another like a leopard.
It had upon it four wings like a bird,
and the beast had four heads,
and power was given to it.

After this I beheld
in the vision of the night,
a fourth beast, terrible and awful,
exceedingly strong.
It had great iron teeth,
eating and breaking in pieces,
and treading down the rest with its feet.
It was unlike to the other beasts
which I had seen before it.
It had ten horns.
I considered the horns,
and behold another little horn
sprung out of the midst of them,
and three of the first horns
were plucked up at its presence.
Behold eyes like the eyes of a human
were in this horn,
and a mouth speaking great things.
I watched until thrones were placed,
and the Ancient of Days sat down.
His garment was white as snow,
and the hair of his head like clean wool.
His throne was like flames of fire,
and the wheels of it like a burning fire.
A swift stream of fire issued forth from before him.
Thousands upon thousands ministered to him,
and a myriad of myriads stood before him.
The court sat in judgment,
and the books were opened.

I looked because of the voice of the great words
which that horn spoke,
and I saw that the beast was slain,
and its body was destroyed
and given to the fire to be burned.
The power of the other beasts was taken away,
and lifetimes were appointed them
for a season and a time.

I beheld therefore in the vision of the night,
and lo, one like a son of man came
with the clouds of heaven,
and he came even to the Ancient of Days,
and they presented him before him.
He gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom.
All peoples, tribes and tongues shall serve him.
His power is an everlasting power
that shall not be taken away,
and his kingdom shall not be destroyed.

Responsorial – Daniel 3.75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 80, 81 Resp. Psalm 66.2b

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Mountains and hills, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

All things that spring up from the earth, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

O fountains, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Seas and rivers, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

You whales and all that move in the waters, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

All you birds of the air, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

All you beasts and cattle, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Give to him glory and praise!

Gospel – Luke 21.29-33

Jesus told his disciples a parable:
“See the fig tree and all the trees.
When they have already put out buds,
you see for yourself,
and you know that summer is already near.
Just so, when you see these things happening,
know that the kingdom of God is near.
Amen, I say to you,
this kind shall not pass away,
until all has happened.
Heaven and earth shall pass away,
but my words shall not pass away.

Reading 1 – Daniel 2.31-45

You, O king, saw and beheld a great idol.
This great idol, which was exceedingly bright,
stood before you; and its form was frightening.
This idol’s head was of fine gold;
its breast and its arms of silver;
its belly and its thighs of brass; its legs of iron;
and its feet partly iron and partly clay.

You gazed at it until a stone was cut out not by hands,
which smote the image upon its iron and clay feet,
and broke them to pieces.
Then the iron, the clay,
the brass, the silver, and the gold,
were broken to pieces together,
and became like the chaff
of the summer threshing floors,
and the wind carried them away,
so that no part of them was found,
and the stone that smote the image
became a great mountain,
and filled the whole earth.

This is the dream:
and we will tell its interpretation before the king.
You, O king, are a king of kings:
for the God of heaven has given you
a kingdom, power, and strength, and glory.
Wherever the children of humans dwell,
and the beasts of the field and the birds of the sky,
he has given into your hand,
and made you ruler over them all.
You are this head of gold.
After you there will arise another kingdom
inferior to yours,
and then a third kingdom of brass,
which shall bear rule over all the earth.
Then fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron,
as iron breaks in pieces and subdues all things.
As iron breaks all things,
it shall break in pieces and bruise.
As you saw the feet and toes,
partly of potters' clay and partly of iron,
the kingdom shall be divided.
There shall be in it the strength of iron,
for you saw the iron mixed with wet clay.
But as the toes of the feet were
partly of iron and partly of clay,
so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly broken.
As you saw iron mixed with wet clay,
so they shall mingle themselves by marital alliances,
but they shall not cleave one to another,
as iron will not mix with clay.

And in the days of these kings
the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom,
which will never be destroyed,
and the kingdom shall not be succeeded by another nation,
but it will break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms,
and it shall stand forever.
For as you saw that the stone
was cut out of the mountain without hands,
and that it broke in pieces
the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold;
so the great God has made known to the king
what will come to pass hereafter.
The dream is certain,
and the interpretation of it is sure.

Responsorial - Daniel 3.57, 58, 59, 60, 61 Resp. 59b

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

All you works of the Lord, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

O angels of the Lord, bless the Lord:
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

O you heavens, bless the Lord:
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

All you waters that are above the heavens, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

All you hosts of the Lord, bless the Lord:
praise and exalt him above all forever.

R. Praise and exalt him above all forever.

Gospel – Luke 21.5-11

Some spoke of the temple, how it was adorned with costly stones and gifts,
so Jesus said,“These things which you behold,
the days are coming when there will not be a stone left on a stone, which will not be thrown down.”

They asked him, saying, “Master, when will this be?
What sign is planned for when these things shall come to pass?”

And he said, “Take heed not to be deceived,
for many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am, and the time draws near.’
Do not follow them.
And when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be afraid,
for these things must first come to pass, but it is not immediately the end.”
Then said he to them, “Race shall rise against race, and kingdom against kingdom,
and there will be great earthquakes from place to place, and famines and epidemics;
and there will be horrors and great signs from heaven.”

Reading 1 – Daniel 1.1-6, 8-20

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah,
Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.
The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand,
along with some of the vessels of the house of God
which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god.
He brought the vessels into the treasury of his god.

The king told Ashpenaz, the head eunuch,
to bring some of the children of Israel,
of the king’s family and of the nobility,
–children without blemish, handsome,
skillful in all wisdom, cunning in knowledge,
understanding science, and able to stand in the king's palace –
whom they might teach the learning and language of the Chaldeans.
The king appointed them a daily provision
of the king's food and of the wine which he drank.
Thus they were educated for three years,
so that in the end they might stand before the king.
Among these were some of the children of Judah:
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

But Daniel decided in his heart
that he would not defile himself
with the portion of the king's food
or with the wine which he drank.
So he requested of the head eunuch
that he might not defile himself.
Now, God had brought Daniel
into favor and sympathy with the head eunuch.
but he said to Daniel, “I fear my lord the king,
who has appointed your food and your drink.
For if he should see your faces looking worse
than the other children with you,
you make me endanger my head to the king.”

Then Daniel said to the steward
whom the head eunuch had set over
Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
“Test your servants, I beseech you, ten days,
and let them give us vegetables to eat and water to drink.
Then let our faces and the faces of the children
who eat of the portion of the king's food be compared,
and as you see, so deal with your servants.

So he consented in this matter and tested them ten days.
At the end of the ten days their faces appeared fairer
and fatter in flesh than all the children
who ate the portion of the king's food.
So the steward took away their portion of food
and the wine for them to drink, and gave them vegetables.

As for these four children,
God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom,
and Daniel had understanding of all visions and dreams.
Now at the end of the time,
that the king had appointed before bringing them in,
the head eunuch brought them to Nebuchadnezzar.
And the king conversed with them,
and among them all no one was found
like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.
So they stood before the king.
And in all matters of wisdom and understanding,
one which the king enquired of them,
he found them ten times better
than all the magicians and astrologers
who were in his realm.

Responsorial – Daniel 3.52, 53, 54, 55, 56 Resp. 52b

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Blessed art thou, O Lord the God of our fathers:
worthy to be praised and glorified and exalted above all forever.
And blessed is the holy name of your glory,
praiseworthy and exalted above all in all ages.

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Blessed are you in the holy temple of your glory,
and exceedingly praiseworthy and exceedingly glorious forever.

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Blessed are you on the throne of your kingdom,
and exceedingly praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Blessed are you who beholds the depths,
and is seated above the cherubim
praiseworthy and exalted above all forever.

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven,
and worthy of praise and glorious forever.

R. Glory and praise above all forever

Gospel – Luke 21.1-4

And looking on, Jesus saw the rich
putting their offerings into the treasury,
and he saw one poor widow putting two pennies in there.
So he said, “Truly I say to you,
that the widow-beggar has put in more than all these.
For all these have put in an offering
from their abundance
but she from her lack,
has put in all which she had for living.”

Reading 1 – Ezekiel 34.11-12, 15-17

For thus says the Lord GOD:
“Behold, I myself will search for my sheep and seek them out.
As a shepherd seeks out his flock
on the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered;
so will I seek out my sheep and will deliver them
out of all places where they have been scattered
on the dark and cloudy day.
I myself will feed my flock,
and I myself will cause them to lie down”, says the Lord God.
“I will seek what was lost
and bring back again what was driven away
and bind up what was broken
and strengthen what was sick,
but I will destroy the fat and the strong;
I will feed them with justice.”
“As for you, O my flock”, says the Lord GOD,
“Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep,
between the rams and the goats.”

Responsorial – Psalm 23.1-2, 2-3, 5-6 Resp. 1

R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He has me lie down in green pastures.

R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
for his name’s sake.

R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

You prepare a table before me,
in the presence of my foes.
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
forever.

R. The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Reading 2 – 1 Corinthians 15.20-26, 28

Brothers and Sisters:
Now Christ is risen from the dead,
and is the firstfruits of those who fell asleep.
For since through a human came death,
the resurrection of the dead also came through a human.
For as in Adam all die,
even so in Christ all will be made alive.
But each in their own order:
Christ the firstfruits.
Afterward, at his coming, those who are Christ’s.
Then comes the end,
when he will deliver the kingdom to his God and Father,
when he will tear down all government and all authority and power.
For it is necessary that he reign,
until he has put all enemies under his feet.
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
And when all is subjected to him,
then the Son will himself be subject
to him who subjected all things under him,
so that God may be all in all.

Gospel – Matthew 25.31-46

Jesus said to his disciples,
“When the Son of human comes in his glory,
and all the holy angels with him,
then he will sit upon the throne of his glory.
Before him shall be gathered all the Gentiles,
and he will separate them, one from another,
as a shepherd separates his sheep from the goats.
He will make the sheep stand at his right hand
and the goats at his left.

Then the King will say to those on his right hand,
‘Come, blessed of my Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you
from the foundation of the world.
For I was an hungry, and you gave me to eat.
I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink.
I was a stranger and you brought me in.
I was naked, and you clothed me.
I was sick, and you visited me.
I was in prison, and you came to me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, saying,
‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you?
Or thirsty, and gave you drink?
When did we see you a stranger, and brought you in?
Or naked, and clothed thee?
When did we see you sick, or in prison, and came to you?’

And the King shall answer and say to them,
‘Amen, I say unto you,
inasmuch as you have done it
for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine,
you have done it for me.’

Then he will say also to those at his left hand,
‘Depart from me, you cursed,
into the everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.
For I was an hungry, and you did not give me to eat.
I was thirsty, and you did not give me to drink.
I was a stranger and you did not bring me in.
I was naked, and you did not clothe me.
I was sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’

Then they will also answer him, saying,
‘Lord, when did we see you
hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison,
and did not minister to you?’
Then he will answer them, saying,
‘Amen, I say unto you,
inasmuch as you did it not
for one of the least of these,
you did not do it for me.’

And they will go away to everlasting punishment,
but the righteous to life eternal.”

Reading 1 – 1 Maccabees 6.1-13

King Antiochus was going through the higher countries,
and he heard that the city of Elymais in Persia
was greatly renowned, and abounding in silver and gold,
and that there was in it a temple, exceeding rich,
with coverings of gold, and breastplates, and shields
which Alexander, son of Philip, King of the Macedonians,
who first reigned over Greece, had left there.

So he came and sought to take the city and to pillage it,
but he was not able,
because the plan was known to those who were in the city,
and they rose up against him in battle.
He fled away from there,
and departed with great sadness,
and returned towards Babylon.

While he was in Persia, someone came and told him
that the armies in the land of Judah had been put to flight,
that Lysias went in with very great power,
and was put to flight before their face,
that they had grown strong by the armor,
and power, and store of spoils,
which they had gotten out of the camps
which they had destroyed,
that they had thrown down the abomination
which he had setup on the altar in Jerusalem,
and that they had compassed about the sanctuary
with high walls as before,
and even his own city Bethsura.

When the king heard these words,
he was struck with fear, and exceedingly upset.
He laid himself down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief,
because things had not gone as he had imagined.
He remained there many days;
great grief came more and more upon him,
and he realized that he would die.

He called for all his Friends, and said to them,
"Sleep is gone from my eyes, and I am fallen away,
and my heart is cast down by anxiety.
I said in my heart: 'How much tribulation has come to me,
and into what floods of sorrow I am now in.
I who was pleasant and beloved in my power!'
But now I remember the evils
that I have done in Jerusalem,
from where I took away all
the spoils of gold and silver that were in it,
and I ordered the destruction
of the inhabitants of Judah without cause.
I know therefore that for this cause
these evils have found me;
behold, I perish with great grief in a strange land."

Responsorial – Psalm 9.2-3,4+6,16+19 Resp. 16a

R. O Lord, I will rejoice in your salvation.

I will give praise to you, O Lord, with my whole heart.
I will tell of all your wonders.
I will be glad and rejoice in you.
I will sing to your name, O Most High.

R. O Lord, I will rejoice in your salvation.

My enemy shall be turned back:
they shall be weakened and perish before your face.
You have rebuked the nations, and the wicked have perished
You have blotted out their name forever and ever.

R. O Lord, I will rejoice in your salvation.

The nations are stuck in the destruction which they have prepared.
Their foot has been taken in the very snare which they hid.
For the poor man shall not be forgotten in the end,
and the patience of the poor shall not perish forever.

R. O Lord, I will rejoice in your salvation.

Gospel – Luke 20.27-40

Some of the Sadducees, who deny that there is any resurrection,
came to Jesus, and they asked him, saying:
“Master, Moses wrote for us: ‘If any man's brother dies, having a wife, and he leaves no children,
his brother should take her as his own wife, and raise up seed for his brother.’

There were once seven brothers:
the first took a wife, and died without children.
And the next took her as his wife, and he also died childless.
And the third took her. And in like manner all seven, and they left no children, and died.
Last of all, the woman died also.
In the resurrection therefore, whose wife shall she be? For all the seven had her as wife.”

And Jesus said to them,
“The sons and daughters of this world marry, and are given in marriage,
but those who shall be accounted worthy of that world,
and the resurrection from the dead,
shall neither be married nor take wives.
Nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels,
and are the sons and daughters of God,
being the sons and daughters of the resurrection.

Now, that the dead are raised, even Moses showed,
at the bush, when he called the Lord:
the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
But he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live in him.”
And some of the scribes answering, said to him, “Teacher, you have said this well”,
and after that they did not dare ask him any more questions.

Reading 1 – 1 Maccabees 4.36-37, 52-59

Then Judas and his brothers said,
“Look, our enemies are destroyed.
Let us go up to cleanse and repair the sacred places."
So all the troops assembled together,
and they went up Mount Zion.

They arose early in the morning
of the 25th day in the 9th month, which is the month of Chislev
in the 148th year,
and offered sacrifice according to the law
upon the new altar of burnt offerings which they had made.
At the time and on the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it,
the very same, it was dedicated anew
with canticles and harps and flutes and cymbals.
All the people fell upon their faces and adored,
and praised to the heavens him who prospered them.

They kept the dedication of the altar eight days,
and they offered burnt offerings with joy
and sacrifices of salvation and of praise.
They adorned the front of the temple
with crowns of gold and shields.
They repaired the gates and the chambers
and installed doors on them.
And there began to be great joy among the people,
and the reproach of the Gentiles was turned away.

Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel
decreed that the day of the dedication of the altar
should, with joy and gladness,
be celebrated in its season from year to year for eight days,
from the 25th day of the month of Chislev.

Responsorial – 1 Chronicles 29.10bcd, 11abc, 11d-12a, 12bcd Resp. 13b

R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.

Blessed are you, LORD,
God of Israel our father,
forever and ever.

R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.

Yours, O LORD is the greatness, and the power,
and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty:
for all that is in the heavens and on earth is yours.
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.

Yours is the kingdom, O LORD,
and you are exalted as head over all.
Both riches and honor come from you.

R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.

You reign over all.
In your hand is power and might,
and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all.

R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.

Gospel – Luke 19.45-48

Jesus went into the temple,
and began to cast out the merchants,
saying to them, “It is written,
My house is the house of prayer,
but you have made it a den of robbers.”

He taught daily in the temple,
The chief priests and the scribes
and the leaders of the people sought to destroy him,
but they were not finding anyway they could act,
for the whole people, listening, clung to him.

Reading 1 – 1 Maccabees 2.15-29

He who was sent by King Antiochus came to the city of Modin,
to compel those who had fled there
to sacrifice and burn incense and depart from the law of God.
Many of the people of Israel consented and joined them,
but Mattathias and his sons stood firm.
He who was sent by Antiochus, answering, said to Mattathias,
“You are a ruler, an honorable and great man in this city,
and adorned with sons and kin.”
Therefore be the first to obey the king's commandment,
as all nations have done,
and even the men of Judah and those who remain in Jerusalem,
and you and your sons shall be numbered among the king's Friends,
and enriched with gold, silver, and many presents.

Then Mattathias answered and said with a loud voice:
“Though all the nations obey King Antiochus and every man
depart from the service of the law of his fathers
and consent to these commandments,
I, my sons, and my kin will obey the law of our fathers.
Will it benefit us to forsake the law and right-living?
We will not hearken to the words of King Antiochus,
to sidestep our worship to the right or to the left.”

Now as he finished speaking these words,
a certain Jew came forward in the sight of all
to sacrifice to the idols upon the altar in the city of Modin,
according to the king's commandment.
Mattathias saw this and was grieved.
His restraint trembled, and his wrath was kindled,
according to the judgment of the law.
Running to him, he slayed him at the altar.
At the same time he slayed he who was sent by King Antiochus,
who had compelled them to sacrifice,
and he pulled down the altar.
He showed zeal for the law,
as Phinehas did concerning Zamri the son of Salu.
Then Mattathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying:
“Everyone who has zeal for the law and maintains the covenant,
let them follow me.”
So he and his sons fled into the mountains,
leaving all that they had in the city.
Then many who sought judgment and justice went into the wilderness.

Responsorial – Psalm 50.1b-2, 5-6, 14-15 Resp. Psalm 50.23b

R. To the one who orders their life aright, I will show the salvation of God.

The mighty God, the LORD, has spoken and summoned the earth
from the rising of the sun to the going down thereof.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God has shined.

R. To the one who orders their life aright, I will show the salvation of God.

“Gather my saints together with me,
those who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”
The heavens shall declare his righteousness,
for God himself is judge.

R. To the one who orders their life aright, I will show the salvation of God.

Offer to God the eucharistic sacrifice [the sacrifice of thanksgiving]
and pay your vows to the Most High.
“Call upon me in the day of trouble
I will deliver you and you will glorify me.”

R. To the one who orders their life aright, I will show the salvation of God.

Gospel – Luke 19.41-44

As Jesus approached Jerusalem,
he beheld the city and wept over it saying,
“If you had known this day and what was for your peace!
But now they are hid from your eyes.
For the days shall come upon you,
when those who you hate shall entrench against you
and surround you and besiege you at every side,
and flatten you and your children within you
and they shall not leave a stone upon a stone within you –
for this reason: you did not know the time of your visitation.

Wednesday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time (I)

Official Translation

Reading 1 – 2 Maccabees 7.1, 20-31

It came to pass that seven siblings along with their mother, were apprehended,
and were tormented with whips and scourges by the king
in order to compel them to eat swine's flesh against the law.

Now the mother who beheld seven sons slain in the space of one day
was to be admired above measure,
and worthy to be remembered by good humans.
She bore it with great courage because of the hope that she had in God.
She bravely exhorted every one of them in her own language,
being filled with wisdom and joining a man's heart to a woman's mind.
She said to them, “I do not know how you were formed in my womb:
for I neither gave you breath, nor soul, nor life,
nor did I form the limbs of any one of you.
But the Creator of the world,
who designed the gestation of humans and causes the origin of all,
will restore to you again in his mercy, both breath and life,
since you now forsake yourselves for the sake of his laws.

Now Antiochus, thinking himself despised,
and, anyway, despising the mocking voice,
when the youngest was yet alive,
not only exhorted him by words but even assured him with an oath,
that he would make him a rich and happy man,
If he would turn from the laws of his fathers,
he would take him for a Friend and furnish him with an income.

When the young man was not moved with these things,
the king called the mother and advised her to
convince the young man to save his life.
When he had exhorted her with many words,
she promised that she would counsel her son.
So bending herself towards him, mocking the cruel tyrant,
she said her own language,
“My son, have pity on me, who bore you for nine months my womb,
and nursed you for years and nourished you and raised you to this age.
I beg you, my son, look upon heaven and earth and all that is in them.
Consider that God made them out of nothing and humans also.

So do not fear this tormentor,
but being a worthy equal with your siblings, receive death,
so that in mercy I may receive you again with your siblings.”
While she was yet speaking these words, the young man said,
“What are you waiting for? I will not obey the commandment of the king,
but the commandment of the law given to us by Moses.
But you have been the author of all violence against the Hebrews,
shall not escape the hand of God.”

Responsorial – Psalm 17.1bcd, 5-6, 8b+15 Resp. Psalm 17.15b

R. I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

Hear justice, O LORD,
attend unto my cry,
give ear unto my prayer, which does not come from lying lips.

R. I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

Sustain my travels in your paths,
so that my feet will not slip.
I have called upon you, for your will hear me, O God.
Incline your ear to me and hear my speech.

R. I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

Keep me as the apple of your eye;
hide me under the shadow of your wings.
As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness.
I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

R. I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

Gospel – Luke 19.11-28

And as they heard these things,
Jesus added and spoke a parable, because he was near Jerusalem
and because they thought that the kingdom of God would immediately appear.

So he said,
“A certain nobleman went into a far country
to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.
And he called ten of his servants, and entrusted to them ten minas,
and said to them, ‘Be busy until I come back.”
But his citizens hated him, and sent a message after him,
saying, ‘We will not have this man to reign over us.’

It came to pass, that when he had returned, having received the kingdom,
he commanded these servants to whom he had given the money,
to be called to him,
so that he might know how much every man had gained by trading.

Then came the first, saying, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten mina.
And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant.
Because you have been faithful in a very little,
have authority over ten cities.’
And the second came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has gained five mina.’
And he likewise said to him, ‘You will be over five cities.’

Another came, saying, ‘Master, behold, here is your mina,
which I have kept laid up in a napkin.
because I feared you, for you are a severe man.
You take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’
And he said to him,
‘Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant.
You knew that I was a severe man,
taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow.
Why then did you not give my money to the bank,
so that at my coming I might have had mine plus interest?’

And he said to those who stood by,
‘Take from him the mina, and give it to him who has ten minas.’
And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas.’

‘I say unto you that everyone who has shall be given to,
and even what they have shall be taken away from them who do not have.’
But as for those enemies of mine,
who did not wish that I should reign over them,
bring them here and slay them before me.’”

And when he had thus spoken,
he led the way, ascending up to Jerusalem.

Tuesday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time (I)

Official Translation

Reading 1 – 2 Maccabees 6.18-31

Eleazar, one of the chief scribes,
a man already advanced in years
and having a face beautiful in appearance,
was forced to open his mouth to eat swine's flesh.
But he, choosing rather a great death than an unclean life,
went forward voluntarily to the tools of torment.
And considering the way he had arrived at this suffering,
he determined not to do any unlawful things for the love of life.

But those who stood by, being moved with wicked pity,
for the old friendship they had with the man,
took him aside and wanted him to bring
meat which it was lawful for him to eat,
so that he might act as if he had eaten as the king had commanded,
from the flesh of the sacrifice.
By so doing he would be delivered from death.
They did him this kindness
for the sake of their old friendship with the man.
But he began to consider the dignity
of his age and his ancient years,
and the inherent honor of his grey head,
and his good life and conversation from a child,
and he answered without delay,
according to the ordinances of the holy law made by God.

He said that he would rather be sent into Sheol,
“For it does not become our age, said he, to pretend:
whereby many young people might think that Eleazar,
at the age of ninety, went over to the life of the heathens,
and they, through my pretending, and this only for a little time of a corruptible life,
should be deceived, and hereby I would bring a stain and a curse upon my old age.
For though, for the present time,
I should be delivered from the punishments of men,
yet I, whether alive or dead, would never escape the hand of the Almighty.

Whereas, by departing manfully out of this life,
I shall show myself worthy of my old age.
I will leave an example of fortitude to young men,
if with a ready mind and constancy I suffer an honorable death,
for the most venerable and most holy laws.

Having spoken thus, he was immediately carried to execution,
and those who led him, although before they had been a little mild,
became angry because of the words he had spoken,
which they thought were uttered out of arrogance.

When he was now ready to die with the beatings,
he groaned, and said, “O Lord, who has the holy knowledge,
you know manifestly that while I might be delivered from death,
I am suffering grievous pains in body.
But in soul I am well content to suffer these things because I fear you.

Thus did this man die, leaving not only to young men,
but to the whole nation as well, the memory of his death:
an example of virtue and fortitude.

Responsorial – Psalm 3.2-3, 4-5, 6-7 Resp. Ps 3.6b

R. The LORD sustained me.

Lord, how increased are those who trouble me!
Many rise up against me.
Many say of my soul,
“There is no help for him in God.”

R. The LORD sustained me.

But you, O LORD, are my shield;
my glory, and the lifter up of my head.
I cried to the LORD aloud,
and he heard me from his holy mountain.

R. The LORD sustained me

I laid me down and slept,
and I woke up again; for the LORD sustained me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousand people,
who have set themselves against me on every side.

R. The LORD sustained me

Gospel – Luke 19.1-10

Jesus entered Jericho to pass through.
And, you see, there was a man named Zacchaeus,
who was the chief tax collector, and he was rich.
And he sought to see who Jesus was,
but could not because of the crowd,
for he was short.
So he ran ahead and climbed up
into a sycamore tree to see him,
for he was going to pass that way.
And when Jesus came to the place,
he looked up and saw him,
and said to him, “Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down;
for today I must stay at your house.”
And he made haste and came down and received him joyfully.

But when they saw it, they all murmured, saying,
“He went to be the guest of a man who is a sinner.”
But Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord,
“Behold, Lord, half of my goods I give to the poor,
and if I have taken anything from anyone falsely,
I will give it back fourfold.
And Jesus said to him,
“This day salvation has come to this house,
for he also is a son of Abraham.”
For the Son of Human has come to seek and to save what was lost.

Monday of the Thirty-Third Week in Ordinary Time (I)

Official Translation

Reading 1 – 1 Maccabees 1.10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63

And there came from the descendents of Alexander’s successors,
a wicked shoot, Antiochus Epiphanes,
the son of King Antiochus, who had been a hostage at Rome,
and he reigned in the hundred and thirty-seventh year
of the kingdom of the Greeks.

In those days there went about in Israel wicked men,
and they persuaded many, saying,
“Let us go, and make a covenant with the heathens
who are around us, for since we departed from them,
many evils have befallen us.
This speech seemed good in their eyes.
Some of the people determined to do this,
and went to the king,
and he gave them license to act
according to the laws of the heathens.
They built a gymnasium in Jerusalem,
according to the laws of the Gentiles,
and they made foreskins for themselves,
and departed from the holy covenant,
and joined themselves to the heathens,
and sold themselves to evil.

Then King Antiochus wrote to all his kingdom,
that all the people should be one,
and everyone should abandon their own law.
All the Gentiles consented to the word of King Antiochus.
and many from Israel consented to his service:
they sacrificed to idols
and profaned the Sabbath.

On the fifteenth day of the month Chislev, in the year 145,
the king set up the abominable idol of desolation upon the altar,
and they built altars throughout all the nearby cities of Judah.
They burnt incense and sacrificed
at the doors of the houses and in the streets.
They cut in pieces and burnt with fire
the books of the law which they found.
Whoever was found with the scrolls of the covenant,
and anyone who observed the law, was put to death,
according to the edict of the king.

And many in Israel were determined and resolved
among themselves
that they would not eat unclean things.
They chose to die rather than be defiled with unclean meats
or break the holy law of God, and they were put to death:
There was very great wrath upon Israel.

Responsorial – Psalm 119.53, 61, 134, 150, 155, 158

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

Horror has taken hold of me because of the wicked
who forsake your law.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

The bands of the wicked have bound me,
but I have not forgotten your law.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

Deliver me from the oppression of humans,
so will I keep your precepts.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

Those who follow after mischief draw close,
they are far from your law.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

Salvation is far from the wicked,
since they seek not your statutes.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

I beheld the transgressors and was grieved;
because they did not keep your word.

R. Enliven me , and I will I keep the covenant.

Gospel – Luke 18.35-43

And it came to pass, as Jesus was coming close to Jericho,
that a blind man sat by the road begging.
Hearing the crowd pass by, he asked what it meant,
and they reported to him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”
He cried, saying, “Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.”
And those who led the way shushed him,
so that he would be silent,
but he cried so much the more,
“Son of David, have mercy on me.”
Jesus stopped and insisted that he be brought to him.
When he had come near, he asked him, saying,
“What do you wish that I will do for you?”
He said, “Lord, that I may see again.”
Jesus said to him,
“See again; your faith has saved you.”
Immediately he saw again,
and followed him, glorifying God.
And all the people seeing gave praise to God.

Reading 1 – Proverbs 31.10-13, 19-20, 30-31

Who can find a worthy wife?
Her value is far beyond jewels.
The heart of her husband trusts in her,
and he will not need treasures.
She will do him good, and not evil,
all the days of her life.
She seeks wool and flax,
and works with ready hands.
She has put out her hand to the distaff,
and her hands have taken hold of the spindle.
She has opened her hand to the needy,
and stretched out her hands to the poor.
Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,
but the woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.
Give to her from the fruit of her hands,
and let her works praise her in the gates.

Responsorial – Psalm 128.1-2, 3, 4-5 Resp. 1a

R. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD.

Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD,
who walk in his ways.
For you shall eat by the labor of your hands;
You will be happy, and all will be well with you.

R. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine
by the sides of your house;
your children like olive plants
around about your table.

R. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD.

Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed
who fears the LORD.
The LORD will bless you from Zion,
and you will see the good of Jerusalem
all the days of your life.

R. Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD.

Reading 2 – 1 Thessalonians 5.1-6

About the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters,
you have no need for me to write to you.
For you yourselves know perfectly
that the day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night.
For when they shall say, “Peace and safety”;
then sudden destruction comes upon them,
as labor upon a pregnant woman,
and they will not escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness,
that that day should overtake you as a thief.
You are all the children of light
and the children of the day.
We are not of the night nor of darkness.
Therefore let us not sleep, as do others,
but let us watch and be sober.

Gospel – Matthew 25.14-30

Jesus said to his disciples:
The kingdom of heaven is like a human going away,
who called his servants,
and entrusted to them his property.
To one he gave five talents,
to another, two,
and to another, one:
to each according to his abilities.
Then he went away.

Immediately, he who had received the five talents
went and traded with them
and earned another five.
and likewise, he who had received two
earned another two,
but he who had received one
went away and dug in the ground,
and hid his master's money.

After a long time,
the master of those servants came back
and settled accounts with them.
So he who had received five talents came forward
and brought the other five talents,
saying, ‘Master, you entrusted me with five talents.
Behold, I have earned another five talents.’
His master said to him,
‘Well done, good and faithful servant.
you have been faithful over a few things,
I will make you ruler over many things.
Enter into your master’s joy!’

And he who had received two talents came forward
saying, ‘Master, you entrusted me with two talents.
Behold, I have earned another two talents.’
His master said to him,
‘Well done, good and faithful servant.
you have been faithful over a few things,
I will make you ruler over many things.
Enter into your master’s joy!’

And he who had received one talent came forward,
saying, ‘Master, I knew you, that you are a hard human,
reaping where you had not planted,
and gathering from where you had not scattered,
and I was afraid, so I went away
and hid your talent in the ground.
Behold, you have what is yours.’

Answering, his master said to him,
‘You useless and cowardly servant.
So you knew that I reap where I had not planted
and gather where I had not scattered, did you?
The you should have put my money in the bank,
and then, when I came back,
I would have received mine plus interest.

Therefore, take the talent from him,
and give it to the one who has ten talents.
For all who have will be rewarded,
and have an abundance,
but the one who does not have,
that which they have will be taken from them.
And expel the unprofitable servant
into the darkness outside,
where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Reading 1 – Wisdom 18.14-16; 19.6-9

While all things were in quiet silence,
and the night was halfway through her course,
Your almighty word leapt down from heaven,
from your royal throne,
as a fierce conqueror into the midst of the land of destruction.
With a sharp sword carrying your unfeigned commandment,
he stood and filled all things with death,
and standing on the earth reached even to heaven.

For every creature according to its kind
was fashioned again as from the beginning,
obeying your commandments,
that your children might be kept unharmed.
For a cloud overshadowed their camp,
and where water was before, dry land appeared,
and in the Red Sea, a way without hindrance,
and out of the great deep, a flowering field:
through which all the nation passed,
protected by your hand,
seeing your miracles and wonders.
For they grazed like horses and skipped like lambs,
praising you, O Lord, who had delivered them.

Responsorial – Psalm 105.2-3, 36-37, 42-43 Resp. 5a

R. Remember the marvelous works the Lord has done.
or
R. Alleluia.

Sing to him; sing psalms to him;
speak of all his wondrous works.
Glory in his holy name.
Let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice.

R. Remember the marvelous works the Lord has done.
or
R. Alleluia.

He smote all the firstborn in their land,
the chief of all their strength.
He brought them forth with silver and gold,
and there was not one feeble person among their tribes.

R. Remember the marvelous works the Lord has done.
or
R. Alleluia.

For he remembered his holy promise,
and Abraham his servant.
He brought forth his people with joy,
and his chosen ones with gladness.

R. Remember the marvelous works the Lord has done.
or
R. Alleluia.

Gospel – Luke 18.1-8

Jesus told a parable to his disciples,
that they ought always to pray and not lose heart, saying:
“There was a judge in a certain city, who neither feared God nor regarded human.
And there was a certain widow in that city, and she came to him, saying,
‘Give me justice from my adversary.’
And he would not for a long time, but afterwards he said within himself,
‘Although I neither fear God nor regard human,
yet because this widow is troublesome to me, I will give her justice,
so that her coming does not wear me out in the end.’”

The Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge says.
Will not God give justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night?
Will he be long-suffering over them?
I say to you, that he will quickly give them justice.
Yet the Son of Human, when he comes, will he find faith on earth?

Reading 1 – Wisdom 13.1-9

Empty are all humans
in whom there is no knowledge of God,
who by these good things that are seen
could not understand HIM WHO IS
nor by attending to the works
have acknowledged who the workman is,
but have imagined either
the fire or the wind or the swift air
or the circle of the stars or the great water
or the sun and moon
to be the gods that rule the world.

If they, being delighted by their beauty,
took them to be gods:
let them know how much more beautiful
is their Lord than they,
for the first author of beauty made all those things.

Or if they admired their power and their effects,
let them understand by them,
that he who made them is mightier than they,
for by the greatness and the beauty of the creature,
their Creator may be seen,
and so be known.

Yet as for these, they are less to be blamed,
for they perhaps err, seeking God,
and desirous to find him.
For being conversant among his works, they search,
and they are persuaded
that the things are good which are seen.

But then again they are not to be pardoned.
For if they were able to know so much
as to make a judgment of the world,
how did they not more easily find out its Lord?

Responsorial – Psalm 19.2-3, 4-5ab Resp. 2a

R. The heavens show forth the glory of God.

The heavens show forth the glory of God,
and the firmament declares the work of his hands.
Day to day utters speech,
and night to night shows knowledge.

R. The heavens show forth the glory of God.

There are no speeches nor languages,
in which their voices are not heard.
Their sound has gone forth through all the earth,
and their words unto the ends of the world.

R. The heavens show forth the glory of God.

Gospel – Luke 17.26-37

Jesus said to his disciples:
“As it came to pass in the days of Noah, so it will also be in the days of the Son of human:
They ate; they drank; they married; they were given in marriage,
until the day that Noah went into the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all.

Likewise it came to pass, in the days of Lot:
They ate; they drank; they bought; they sold; they planted; they built.
Then on the day Lot left Sodom, it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.

Accordingly, it will be so on the day when the Son of human is revealed.
On that day, there will be someone on the house and their goods in the house.
Let them not go down to get them.
And it is the same with someone in the field: they should not turn around to go back.
Remember Lot's wife!
If someone seeks to preserve their life, they will lose it, and anyone who loses it will produce it.

I say to you, on that night there shall be two upon one bed:
the one guy will be taken, and the other guy will be left.
Two will be together grinding grains:
the one lady will be taken and the other lady will be left.”
And answering they said to him: “Where, Lord?”
And he said to them, “Wherever the body is, the vultures gather there.”

Reading 1 – Wisdom 7:22b – 8:1

For in Wisdom is the spirit –
understanding, holy, one,
manifold, subtle, eloquent,
active, undefiled, sure,
sweet, loving what is good,
quick, unhindered, beneficent,
gentle, kind, steadfast,
assured, secure, all-powerful,
overseeing all, and containing all spirits:
the intelligible, the pure, the subtle.

For Wisdom is more active than all activity,
and reaches everywhere by reason of her purity.
For she is an aura of the power of God,
and a certain pure emanation
of the glory of the almighty God.
Therefore nothing defiled comes into her.
For she is the brightness of eternal light,
and the unspotted mirror of God's majesty,
and the image of his goodness.
Though being only one, she can do all things.
Remaining herself the same, she renews all things.

Through the ages she conveys herself into holy souls,
She makes friends of God and prophets.
For God loves none but the one who dwells with wisdom.
For she is more beautiful than the sun,
and above all the order of the stars.
Compared with light, she takes precedence,
for that is overcome by night,
but no evil can overcome wisdom.
She reaches therefore from end to end mightily,
and orders all things smoothly.

Responsorial – Psalm 119.89, 90, 91,130,135,175 Resp. 89a

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

Forever, O Lord, is your word
it stands firm in heaven.
R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

Your truth is unto all generations.
You have founded the earth, and it continues.

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

By your decree the day goes on,
for all things serve you.

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

The declaration of your words gives light;
it gives understanding to little ones.

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

Let your face shine upon your servant:
and teach me your directions.

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

My soul shall live and shall praise thee:
and your decrees shall help me.

R. Forever, O Lord, is your word.

Gospel – Luke 17.20-25

Being asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come,
Jesus answered them, and said:
“The Kingdom of God does not come with observation.
Nor will it be announced:
“Behold here it is” or “Behold there it is”.
For the Kingdom of God is existing within you.

And he said to his disciples,
“The days will come when you will desire to see one day of the Son of Human but you shall not see it.
And they will say to you, “Behold, he is there” and “Behold, he is here.”
Do not go away with them. Do not follow them.
For as the lightning strikes, lighting up the sky from one part to the other,
so shall the Son of Human be in his day.
But first he must suffer many things, and be rejected by this kind.

Reading 1 - Ezekiel 47:1-2,8-9,12

The angel brought me back to the gate of the temple,
and behold waters flowed out
from under the threshold of the temple toward the east
(for the front of the house looked toward the east),
but the waters came down to the south side of the temple
to the south part of the altar.

And he led me out by the way of the north gate,
and he took me to the outward gate
which looked toward the east,
and behold water was trickling out on the south side.

And he said to me,
“These waters flow toward the east
and go down to the Arabah,
and go into the sea.
Where it enters the sea, the water will be fresh,
and every living creature whatsoever that crawls
will live wherever the river goes
and there shall be abundant fish.
Where this river goes, the water will become fresh,
and all things shall live.

And by the river, on its banks,
on both sides
all fruit-bearing trees will grow.
Their leaf shall not fall off, and their fruit shall not fail.
Every month they will bring forth fruit,
because they will be watered from the flow out of the sanctuary,
and their fruit shall be for food, and their leaves for medicine.

Responsorial - Psalm 46:2-3,5-6,8-9

R. The stream of the river makes the city of God joyful, the most High has sanctified his own dwelling.

Our God is our refuge and strength,
a helper in troubles, which have found us exceedingly.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth quakes,
and the mountains fall into the depths of the sea.

R. The stream of the river makes the city of God joyful, the most High has sanctified his own dwelling.

The stream of the river makes the city of God joyful,
the most High has sanctified his own dwelling.
God is in the midst of it; it shall not be disturbed.
God will help it in the early morning.

R. The stream of the river makes the city of God joyful, the most High has sanctified his own dwelling.

The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our protector.
Come and behold the works of the Lord,
the wonders he has done upon earth,

R. The stream of the river makes the city of God joyful, the most High has sanctified his own dwelling.

Reading 2 – 1 Corinthians 3:9c-11, 16-17

Brothers and Sisters:
You are God's building.
According to the grace of God given to me,
as a wise architect,
I have laid the foundation;
and another builds on it,
but let everyone take heed how he builds on it.
For no one can lay another foundation ,
than that which has been laid,
which is Christ Jesus.
Do you not know that you are the temple of God,
and that the Spirit of God dwells in you ?
if anyone destroys the temple of God,
God will destroy them.
For holy is the temple of God, which you are.

Gospel - John 2.13-22

The Passover of the Jews was near,
and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
He found, sitting in the temple,
the sellers of oxen and sheep and doves and the moneychangers.
So when he had made a whip out of cords,
he drove them all out of the temple,
including the sheep and the oxen,
and he poured out the moneychangers’ money,
and he overturned the tables.
And to those who sold doves he said,
“Take these things out of here,
and do not make the house of my Father a house of a bazaar.”
His disciples remembered that it was written,
“The zeal for your house has consumed me.”

The Jews, therefore, answered, and said to him,
“What sign do you show us, since you do these things?”
Jesus answered, and said to them,
“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
Then the Jews said, “It took forty-six years to build this temple,
and you will raise it up in three days?
But he spoke of the temple of his body.

Therefore when he was risen from the dead,
his disciples remembered that he had said this,
and they believed the Scripture
and the word that Jesus had said.

Reading 1 - Wisdom 2:23-3:9

For God created the human as an immortal,
and in the image of his own likeness he made him.
However, by the envy of the devil, death came into the world,
and the ones who taste it are those being part of that one.
But the souls of the just are in the hand of God,
and no torment shall touch them.
They seemed, in the sight of the foolish, to die.
Their departure was reckoned an abuse,
and their going away from us, an affliction,
but they are at peace.

And though in the sight of humans they suffered torments,
their hope is full of immortality.
In a few ways, afflicted;
in many ways, well-rewarded,
because God has tried them,
and found them worthy of himself.
As gold in the furnace he has proved them,
and as a sacrificial victim he has received them.
They will shine in their time, they will be respected.
They will fly to and fro like sparks in the weeds.
They shall judge nations and rule over people,
and their Lord shall reign forever.
Those who trust in him, shall understand the truth,
and the faithful in love shall rest in him,
since grace and peace are given to his elect.

Responsorial - Psalm 34:2-3, 16-17, 18-19 Resp. 2a

R. I will bless the Lord at all times.

I will bless the Lord at all times,
his praise shall be always in my mouth.
In the Lord my soul will be joyful.
Let the meek hear and rejoice.

R. I will bless the Lord at all times.

The eyes of the Lord are on the just,
and his ears are for their prayers.
But the face of the Lord is against evildoers,
to cut off remembrance of them from the earth.

R. I will bless the Lord at all times.

The just cried, and the Lord heard them,
and delivered them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted,
and he will save the humble of spirit.

R. I will bless the Lord at all times.

Gospel - Luke 17:7-10

Jesus said to the Apostles:
Which one of you having a slave plowing, or feeding cattle,
when he comes in from the field, says to him, “Come here right now and sit down”?
Do you not say to him, “Prepare the meal, and put on your apron,
and serve me, while I eat and drink and afterward you may eat and drink”?
And you do not thank the slave because he did what you commanded, do you?

So you also, when you have done all that you are commanded, say,
“We are unprofitable slaves; what we have done, we were obligated to do.”

Reading 1 - Wisdom 1.1-7

Love justice,
you who judge the earth.
Think of the Lord in goodness,
and seek him in simplicity of heart.
For he is found
by those who do not test him,
and he shows himself
to those who have faith in him.

For perverse thoughts distance one from God,
and his strength, when it is tried,
rebukes the foolish.
Since wisdom will not enter into a malicious soul,
nor dwell in a body subject to sins.
For the Holy Spirit of discipline
will flee from the deceitful,
and will withdraw himself from
thoughts that are without understanding,
and he will rebuke iniquity when it comes.

For the spirit of wisdom is caring,
and will not free someone who blasphemes with their lips.
For God is witness of their kidneys [inmost being],
and he is a true searcher of their heart,
and a listener to their tongue.
For the Spirit of the Lord has filled society,
and hold all together;
he has knowledge of each voice.

Responsorial - Psalm 139.1b-3, 4-6, 7-8, 9-10 Resp. 24b

R. Lead me, Lord, in the eternal way.

Lord, you have tested me and known me;
you know my sitting down and my rising up.
You understood my thoughts afar off;
my repast and my busying you have searched out.
And you have understood all my ways.
R. Lead me, Lord, in the eternal way.

The speech is not on my tongue.
Behold, O Lord, you have known all things,
Before and after, you have formed me,
and have laid your hand upon me.
The knowledge is above me:
it is high, and I cannot reach it.

R. Lead me, Lord, in the eternal way.

To where shall I go from your spirit,
and where shall I flee from your face?
If I ascend into heaven, you are there.
If I descend into Sheol, you are present.

R. Lead me, Lord, in the eternal way.

If I take my wings early in the morning,
and dwell at the end of the sea,
even there your hand leads me,
your right hand would hold me.

R. Lead me, Lord, in the eternal way.

Gospel - Luke 17.1-6

Jesus said to his disciples:
“It is impossible that scandals should not come:
but woe to him through whom they do come.
It would be better for him if a stone were hung around his neck
and he were cast into the sea,
than that he would scandalize one of these little ones.

Watch yourselves!
If your brother or sister sins against you,
reprove them: and if they reconsider, forgive them.
And if they sin against you seven times a day,
and seven times turn to you,
saying, “I have reconsidered”, forgive them.”

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith”,
and the Lord said,
“If you had faith like a mustard seed,
you might say to this mulberry tree,
‘be rooted up, and be transplanted into the sea’
and it would obey you.”

Reading 1 - Wisdom 6.12-16

Bright and unfading is wisdom,
and easily seen by those who love her,
and found by those who seek her.
She anticipates those who desire her,
that she may first reveal herself to them.
The one who is awake for her at dawn,
will not be troubled,
for they will find her sitting at their door.
Therefore, to think about her is the consummation of perception,
and the one who is awake because of her,
will quickly be secure.

For she goes about seeking such as are worthy of her,
and she graciously reveals herself to them in the ways,
and meets them with all providence.

Responsorial - Psalm 63.2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 Resp. 63.2b

R. For you my soul has thirsted, O Lord

O God, my God, to thee do I watch at break of day.
For you my soul has thirsted; for you my flesh yearns.
Like an exhausted desert land, where there is no water.

R. For you my soul has thirsted, O Lord

So I have come before you in the Sanctuary,
to see your power and your glory,
for your mercy is better than life.
My lips shall praise you.

R. For you my soul has thirsted, O Lord

Thus I will bless you all my life long,
and in your name I will lift up my hands.
Let my soul be filled as with rich foods,
and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips.

R. For you my soul has thirsted, O Lord

I have remembered you in my bed,
and I will meditate on you in the early morning,
because you were my helper,
and I will rejoice under the cover of your wings:

Reading 2 - 1 Thessalonians 4.13-18 or 13-14

We do not wish you to be ignorant, brothers and sisters,
about those who have fallen asleep,
so that you will not weep like the others who have no hope.
For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again,
so also God will, through Jesus,
take to himself those who have fallen asleep.
For we say this to you in the word of the Lord:
that we who live,
remaining in the presence of the Lord,
will not precede those who sleep.
For the Lord himself, with a shout,
with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God
will come down from heaven
and the dead in Christ will rise first.
Then we the living, the remaining,
at one time with them be taken up in the clouds
into a meeting with the Lord in the air.
So we will all be with the Lord.
Therefore, encourage one another with these words.

Gospel - Matthew 25.1-13

Jesus said to his disciples:
Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins,
who, taking their own lamps, went out to meet the bridegroom.
Now, five of them were foolish and five wise.
For the foolish ones, having taken their lamps,
did not take oil with them,
but the wise took oil in their bottles with their own lamps.
But the bridegroom being delayed, they all were drowsy and fell asleep.

In the middle of the night, there was a shout:
“Behold the bridegroom! Go forth to meet him!”
Then all those virgins arose and prepared their lamps.
The foolish said to the wise,
“Give us some of your oil, for our lamps have run out.”
However, the wise said, “Definitely not!
There is not enough for us and for you.
Instead, go to the sellers and purchase some.”
But while they were gone shopping, the bridegroom came,
and those who were ready
went in with him to the wedding feast,
and the door was shut.
Finally, the other virgins came, saying,
“Lord, Lord, open up for us”,
but he answered saying,
“Amen I say to you, I do not know you.”
Stay awake, therefore,
because you do not know the day nor the hour.

Brothers and Sisters:
Greet Prisca and Aquila, my helpers in Christ Jesus,
who have put their necks on the line for my soul:
for which not only I, but also all the churches of the Gentiles, give thanks,
and greet the church which is in their house.
Greet Epenetus, my beloved:
who is the firstfruits of Asia for Christ.
Greet Mary, who has labored much among you.
Greet Andronicus and Junia, my kinsmen and fellow prisoners:
who are of note among the apostles,
and were in Christ before me.

Greet Ampliatus, most beloved to me in the Lord.
Greet Urbanus, our helper in Christ Jesus, and Stachys, my beloved.
Greet one another with a holy kiss.
All the churches of Christ greet you.

I Tertius, who wrote down this letter, greet you in the Lord.
Gaius, host to me and the whole church, greets you.
Erastus, the treasurer of the city, greets you,
and Brother Quartus.

Now to him that is able to establish you
in my gospel and the teaching about Jesus Christ,
in the revelation of the mystery, kept secret from time eternal, but now made manifest through the prophetic Scriptures,
and in the precept of the eternal God for the obedience of faith, recognized among all nations,
let there be glory into eternity to the only wise one, God, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

Responsorial - Psalm 145.2-3, 4-5, 10-11 Resp. 1b

R. Lord, I will bless your name forever.

Every day I will bless you,
and I will praise your name forever; yea, forever and ever.
Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and of his greatness there is no end.

R. Lord, I will bless your name forever.

Generation upon generation will praise your works
and declare your power.
They will speak of the magnificence of your glorious holiness:
and tell of your wondrous works.

R. Lord, I will bless your name forever.

Let all your works, O Lord, praise you,
and let your holy ones bless you.
They will speak of the glory of your kingdom:
and tell of your power.

R. Lord, I will bless your name forever.

Gospel - Luke 16.9-15

Jesus said to his disciples:
“I say to you: Make friends for yourselves with the Mammon of injustice,
so that when it is eclipsed, they will accept you into eternal dwellings.

The faithful one in little things is also faithful in great things.
and the unjust one in little things, is also unjust in great things.

If then you have not become faithful in the unjust Mammon,
who will trust you with what is true?
And if you have not become faithful in what is another's,
who will give you what is your own?

No housekeeper can serve two lords:
for either they will hate one and love the other,
or attend to one and neglect the other.
You cannot serve God and mammon."

Hearing this, the Pharisees who really were money-lovers derided him.
And he said to them,
“You are justifying yourselves in the eyes of humans, but God knows your hearts,
for that which is high among humans is an abomination in the sight of God.”
