Reading 1 – 1 Maccabees 4.36-37, 52-59
Then Judas and his brothers said,
“Look, our enemies are destroyed.
Let us go up to cleanse and repair the sacred places."
So all the troops assembled together,
and they went up Mount Zion.
They arose early in the morning
of the 25th day in the 9th month, which is the month of Chislev
in the 148th year,
and offered sacrifice according to the law
upon the new altar of burnt offerings which they had made.
At the time and on the day on which the Gentiles had defiled it,
the very same, it was dedicated anew
with canticles and harps and flutes and cymbals.
All the people fell upon their faces and adored,
and praised to the heavens him who prospered them.
They kept the dedication of the altar eight days,
and they offered burnt offerings with joy
and sacrifices of salvation and of praise.
They adorned the front of the temple
with crowns of gold and shields.
They repaired the gates and the chambers
and installed doors on them.
And there began to be great joy among the people,
and the reproach of the Gentiles was turned away.
Then Judas and his brothers and all the assembly of Israel
decreed that the day of the dedication of the altar
should, with joy and gladness,
be celebrated in its season from year to year for eight days,
from the 25th day of the month of Chislev.
Responsorial – 1 Chronicles 29.10bcd, 11abc, 11d-12a, 12bcd Resp. 13b
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.
Blessed are you, LORD,
God of Israel our father,
forever and ever.
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.
Yours, O LORD is the greatness, and the power,
and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty:
for all that is in the heavens and on earth is yours.
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.
Yours is the kingdom, O LORD,
and you are exalted as head over all.
Both riches and honor come from you.
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.
You reign over all.
In your hand is power and might,
and it is in your hand to make great and to give strength to all.
R. Our God, we praise your glorious name.
Gospel – Luke 19.45-48
Jesus went into the temple,
and began to cast out the merchants,
saying to them, “It is written,
My house is the house of prayer,
but you have made it a den of robbers.”
He taught daily in the temple,
The chief priests and the scribes
and the leaders of the people sought to destroy him,
but they were not finding anyway they could act,
for the whole people, listening, clung to him.
